Dr. Ronnie Floyd explains his church's gifts to the Cooperative Program

This is from Ronnie Floyd's blog Between Sundays under his post entitled Why I Am Permitting Myself To Be Nominated As The President of The Southern Baptist Convention This was Ronnie Floyd's No. 4 reason he cites:

I believe in our cooperative effort through the Cooperative Program of the SBC, which our church has given over $3.4 million to over the last 10 years for the mission causes of our denomination. In fact, let me state what has happened over the past five years and is happening this year as well: we have increased our Cooperative Program gifts 8% annually over the past five years and are doing so in our present budget this year. This 8% increase represents the amount of both Cooperative Program allocation areas; to Arkansas ($32,000) and to SBC in Nashville ($189,000) which totals $221,000 towards the Cooperative Program. With other SBC allocations, this combines to total $489,000 last year. This 8% increase to the Cooperative Program has happened while we planned and are now in the final stages of construction on two major building projects and expansions that are taking place on both campuses at a cost of $38.5 million. We are a church that is very committed to the Cooperative Program and believe in the cooperative effort to share the Good News of Jesus globally.

If his most recent giving was an 8 % increase over last year, what exactly was FBC Springdale giving the year before that?

This explanation is really confusing. Ronnie says his church has increased CP giving annually over the last 5 years. That would mean an increase of almost 50%. That doesn't agree with the numbers we are given. He says they gave $221,000 last year. My memory of their giving over the last several years is around $200,000 per year. Wes Kenney's table lists CP gifts of $174,992 in 2001 and 248,917 in 2002. Starting from either year you would arrive a number much larger than 221,000 for 2005. The most accurate way to detemine CP gifts would be to look at the Arkansas and SBC annual and see how much they report given by FBC Springdale. In 1989 they reported CP giving of about $200,000 with undesignated receipts of around $2,000,000. Last year they reported according to Pastor Floyd CP gifts of about $221,000 with undesignated receipts of almost $12,000,000. It seems like their giving increase doesn't reflect much committment to the Cooperative Program. If we are missing something a clear explanation of the numbers from FBC Springdale would help.

It seems like we have a shell game here of mixing up CP giving and SBC causes. Not all SBC causes are CP giving. If every church counted their Lottie Moon and Annie Armstrong giving in with their CP gifts, their percentages would go up. What are the other SBC causes?

An important question he needs to answer is why does he only give $32,000 through the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. The usual practice is giving all CP gifts through the state convention. Does he not believe in the ministries of our state convention?

I hope your blog allow some follow up on the strange mathematics they are using.

while dr. floyd's statement is certainly confusing, one thing is certain: $3.4 million over 10 years is not even 10% of the $38.5 million for construction. I am sorry but I fail to see the commitment to the Cooperative Program.

It is strange logic that seems to communicate that if you involved in a buildling program, you are excused from contributing much to the CP.
