Editors note: We saw this column in the Arkansas Baptist News and thought we would pass it along to you. Arkansas appears to be under represented in the Young Leaders' and reform movements. We don't know why that is. We call on more Arkansans to become involved in the SBC reformation. One might think that some of the theology professors at Ouachita Baptist University might have an opinion on these matters.

    We need these young leaders

There's a new faction in Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) life. It's a bit hard to categorize the group. Many are young pastors. Some are bloggers. But some are not so young, and some don't blog. Most are conservative and applaud the conservative resurgence of the 1980 and 90s. The common thread is their discontentment with the "triumphalism, arrogance and isolationism" they see in Southern Baptist life.

I showed up at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Memphis May 2 to cover a gathering of about 30 of them. They would not allow me in their meeting, saying it was an invitation -- only meeting and they did not want the presence of a journalist to inhibit anyone in the group -- even though another Baptist editor had been invited. It also is ironic they have called for more openness in Baptist life, yet closed their meeting.

However, they were gracious in granting me an interview with several of their leaders after the meeting ended May 3. They were open and candid.

    I applaud their "Memphis Declaration."

I think Warren may be a little out of touch himself...its seems he knows nothing of Frank Page - who is not a young leaders candidate - but is a strong alternative.

I also do not think he understands that younger leaders are not easily discouraged...Come on Charlie, you can do better than that.

Tad, I am not sure Frank had announced as a candidate when Charlie wrote that. Also, Art Rogers and other bloggers have been hinting that the young leaders may stop supporting the convention with their dollars or their attendance unless there is change. Not much different that what Charlie was saying. I hope they don't but Charlie is usually a pretty good judge of what his happening in our convention.
I wish the Memphis meeting folks would have allowed Charlie in to the meeting instead of the fellow from Missouri. I've got a feeling Charlie would be a much better friend to them than the other guy.
