Updated: SBC Bloggers according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

ADG religion reporter Laura Lynn Brown does a good job of lifting the hood on this new trend. If you read the whole piece you'll see that not everyone is happy about blogging (mainly Ronnie Floyd).

We do wonder who the ADG art department modeled their blogging preacher after. It's not Wade or Ronnie and we've never see Marty or Art. Can anyone shed any light on this? I do appreciate them getting the logo of the Southern Baptist Convention right, although it is in need of some major updating. (this gives us an idea.)

    Piece of Mind
Web logs may not be the gospel truth, but they're gaining popularity as a source of information.

BY LAURA LYNN BROWN ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

The SBC Outpost sounds like a dusty Western general store where passersby can tie up their horses, get a drink and some provisions and ask about the latest news or gossip. In a way, that's what happens at this outpost. But the transportation is a computer and Internet connection, not a horse. The site purveys news, commentary and shootin' from the hip on Southern Baptist Convention life, and the conversation is lively as the nation's largest Protestant denomination nears its annual convention June 13-14 in Greensboro, N.C.

The Rev. Marty Duren, a Georgia minister, started the blog -- short for Web log, a sort of online journal -- in April 2005. He chose the name partly because his first three choices were already taken. Southern Baptists who read blogs often mention the SBC Outpost (sbcoutpost.blogspot.com) first when they list the ones they check regularly. That's where many Baptists first learned that the Rev. Ronnie Floyd of First Baptist Church in Springdale said he would accept nomination as president of the convention at their annual meeting.

Actually, that is Marty Duren. And no art department was involved; that is a photograph.

Okay, I made that up. I'm not sure there really is a "Marty Duren."

What's wrong with the logo? It was good enough for Paul and Silas...

Your friend did a really good job on the SBC blogging piece.

I think the problem with the logo is it isn't the KJV>

Dude... you're so wrong. What's up with the "especially Ronnie Floyd" comment. You make it sound like he's bashing it... come on man.

Hey - I'm sitting in Starbucks in WLR and I don't see you. I'm picturing you as 30-ish with a big worn-out shirt bearing John Calvin's face... where's batman?

    Wes,

Welcome to the blog...the logo is the old SBC logo, I'm not a big fan of it. I grew up looking at it all my life, we need a little redesign.

Marty has e-mail me before...I think he is real? :)

    Brian,

You are very close to the Bat cave. You have to admit RF isn't happy with the blogging.

I hope the wedding went well and you and your family have enjoyed your time in the Rock.

Where are you attending church tomorrow?

    Anne,

One might think the KJV and SBC logos are the same.

I don't even think he reads them... but he wants to be sure we utilize the blogs to further th kingdom. In fact- he is the most alert Pastor I have come across.. he is very much "up" on the times and understands that the way we are beginning to communicate now will shape the way we evangelize for years to come. Above all, he sees an opportunity to minister.

Hey Batman - I think the name has stuck. What's up with the blogging article. I got no street cred whatsoever.

Brian - I don't think Dr. Floyd realized what the blog culture was like. I think he questions their value as a unifying force. He may be right - it will definitely not produce aimless loyalty.

But you are right that he has effectively used technology as a means of reaching out.

I can't believe that reporter was so flippant as not to use Martin's given name. ;)

At any rate, that pic is definitely not of Marty. You can find a pic of him here.

    True story ...

Once a pastor of mine (we'll call him Sven) couldn't get his computer to print out his sermon notes.

So on Sunday night, "Sven" walked in with his laptop in tow and set it down in front of him on the podium, opened it ... and began preaching. I laughed pretty hard at that memory brought back to mind by this artist's rendering. It actually happened!

    Tad,

Batman, here...I'm sorry you weren't mentioned by name in the story. I went through the whole interview process via e-mail; answering numerous questions. She told me later that her editor wouldn't allow her to mention our anonymous blog. That's okay...no big deal. She should have mentioned you by name.

Tad- I may be reading this comment wrong, so correct me if so:

You said "I think he questions their value as a unifying force. He may be right - it will definitely not produce aimless loyalty."

You say "I think he questions their value..." as if you are drawing a conclusion, then you say "He may be right..." followed by what I perceived as a jab (which is fine).

What I don't understand is how the jab came as the result of an idea that you THINK he made.

I don't think you realized what you did, and I'm not totally sure that was your intent... but if so- that's the kind of stuff that has been flying around here in Gotham City and over at Marty's black hole that gets under my skin. It's not the "Hey let's question this or that-" It's the "Hey I bet this is what he was thinking and these were his motives... so I'll say this... jab jab jab"

Razorbaptist, we have corresponded by email but I just discovered you have fixed up your blogspot. I will look forward to checking it often and commenting from time to time if you don't mind since Arkansas, the Razorbacks and Baptist life are three of my favorite interests. In fact since I use RZRBK as my blog name and my friends know me to be passionate about the Razorbacks and the Arkansas and Southern Baptist convention, some have asked me if I was Razorbaptist when they saw your comments on some of the other blogs.

Brian – hey bro. I was not taking a jab at you...This is the dark side of bloggin – if we don’t spend enough time crafting our words – our point is missed.

    Here was my point:
    1. Ronnie may be right is his assumption that blogging is not a unifying force. I think he is right to an extent. If the powers that be equate unity with the idea that alternate and varied viewpoints are varied to the cause – then it will produce disunity.
    2. I was not saying that you are blindly loyal. I would hope that you are loyal to Dr. Floyd. You serve at his church. This is not blind – I was speaking of the issue with many in SBC power politics that expect blind loyalty and feel threatened by the blog world because ideas and being discussed.
Forgive me for not wording all of that well, but I promise it was not intended at a jab towards you or Dr. Floyd.

Hey man- thanks for the email this morning...

I am sorry as well if I came accross as being too offended- I know that emotions don't carry through at all on the blogs, so alot of times people get misunderstood. Hey - maybe we should come up with a manual to help that situation a bit! Like we don't have enough to do already, huh?
