Dr. Sam Shaw resigns as senior pastor of Germantown Baptist Church.

Read Dr. Shaw's statement to his church

Here's a little background from the Associated Baptist Press.

I find this an interesting statement in the ABP article: "If the motion had been approved, Germantown likely would have been the largest Baptist congregation to adopt the Presbyterian-style system."

W.B. Johnson, the first president of the SBC, practiced and advocated an eldership model of church government. Tom Nettles says, "No single individual had more to do with determining the nature of the Southern Baptist Convention than W. B. Johnson."

It's sad to me how many SBCers aren't aware of historical SBC beliefs and practices. If someone doesn't agree with historical SBC leaders, that's their preogative. But please don't call historical SBC beliefs and practices "Presbyterian."

But there are many sad aspects of this story. Suffice it to say John 17 has been heavy on my heart lately.

I'm with Steve W. It's one thing to oppose a plurality of elders as a method of polity, and it's another completely to paint it as "presbyterian" "rule".

I also think it's a shame that some method of reconciliation could not be brokered between Christians inside the local church. That's a little harsh.

BTW, RazorBaptist, I found you blog thru my pastor, and I'm linking you today. Make us proud, Hog.
