I think the SBC will win with any of the men. I think this is healthy.
If everyone conducts themselves with grace and integrity there will be no losers and the name that will get the most publicity will be the name Jesus Christ.
This is the first time we have ever had a Patterson candidate, a Pressler candidate and a People's candidate. One represents the extreme righ-wing, national political segment now influenced by the Sutton connection to Vision America or whatever the correct name of the Pressler/Rick Scarborough lobbing group is and to Falwell (where the Sutton children are in school.) Sutton's position does represent many SBCer's thinking. Another candidate has the endorsement of Patteron but was second choice to begin with and then had the backing pulled and was left out to struggle by those he had counted on. The third candidate has the support of many who are ready to be more practical, in a Biblical way, and for unselfish reasons it seems. If he is in a runoff with either the Patterson or Pressler candidate he doesn't stand a chance which was the plan when Pressler put his guy in the race.
Therefore it pains me to predict that Sutton will win and that the direction of the SBC will take a giant step in the same direction as the past 25 years. Sutton wants to "define Baptist identy!?" Impossible! Baptist identy is formed by what friends, neighbors, and family see in Baptists that they know. It can't be decided by a few, declared and adhered to on demand.
