    From the New York Times

Disowning Conservative Politics Is Costly for an Evangelical Pastor

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — Like most pastors who lead thriving evangelical megachurches, the Rev. Gregory A. Boyd was asked frequently to give his blessing — and the church’s — to conservative political candidates and causes.

The requests came from church members and visitors alike: Would he please announce a rally against gay marriage during services? Would he introduce a politician from the pulpit? Could members set up a table in the lobby promoting their anti-abortion work? Would the church distribute “voters’ guides” that all but endorsed Republican candidates? And with the country at war, please couldn’t the church hang an American flag in the sanctuary?

After refusing each time, Mr. Boyd finally became fed up, he said. Before the last presidential election, he preached six sermons called “The Cross and the Sword” in which he said the church should steer clear of politics, give up moralizing on sexual issues, stop claiming the United States as a “Christian nation” and stop glorifying American military campaigns.

“When the church wins the culture wars, it inevitably loses,” Mr. Boyd preached. “When it conquers the world, it becomes the world. When you put your trust in the sword, you lose the cross.”

I am concerned about politics in church but both democrats and republicans. The democrats use the church too-the liberal ones. Thanks for the link.

I've not been able to walk with Gregory Boyd on the issue of God's exhaustive foreknowledge, but we're certainly on the same track here.

I am definitely against us bowing down to the Republican party. I also don't particularly like the "God and Country" spectaculars we often have in church. But we should never shy away from addressing the hot-button issues of today. The Bible speaks to everything and offers absolute, uncompromising truth on these issues. We would do well though to address them with the love of Christ and the integrity of the scriptures.

Good post! I would also recommend that you read Boyd's book that is based on those sermons, "The Myth of the American Nation." I'm working on it right now and it's fantastic.

I just posted my thoughts on Boyd as well on my blog. Here's my shameless plug to check it out!

btw, I agree with Ben about Boyd's friendship with Open Theism, but on this area he seems to be right on.

Check out this interview for a similar perspective. This author was recently on Dobson's show "debating" Dave Barton of Wallbuilders.

Also, on Issues, Etc. Todd Wilkin had Barton no as a guest. I don't think Barton defended his position well. I think it was in May 2005.
