    Calvinsim is becoming popular...what?

Check out our man Tom Ascol over at the Club Founders. He provides some good commentary on the cover story from latest edition of Christianity Today.

    Here's Tom:
"The article documents what a few people have been saying for the last few years: we are in the early stages of real reformation. Reformed theology certainly is foundational to this reformation, but what is happening should not be dismissed or superficially assessed as simply more people becoming Calvinists than in previous years. From my vantage point God is raising up a generation who are weary of an American evangelicalism that is insipid at best and in truth is more committed to America than it is to the evangel."

    Amen Brother!

    Amen Amen

The critics seem to be running scared...they are preaching against calvinism like crazy. But they are proving the point.

What is funny to me is that I grew up being a Calvinist in a small-town baptist church without anyone teaching it to me or describing it in those terms. It just is how I read the bible. So, naturally, I thought most people believed similarly in the SBC. :) Oops.

I caught my Calvinism the old-fashioned way. I was a Presbyterian who actually studied what we believed.

What struck me about the Baptist "system" was that we're supposed to be burdened for souls, because Paul said somewhere that he was. Oh, there's also the admonition that if we don't go out there and tell them, they'll die lost. Plus the fact that Jesus said we were to be His witnesses and make disciples everywhere (but of course He also said we were to baptize them and hold on... that's not up to me, it's up to the organization..).

Now my presbyterian mentors said that's all God's work, and our work is to do what we're told. And if the scripture tells me to witness, then not doing that is a sin. And that sin is a bad as it gets.

For years in Birmingham ... (can you say "bible belt"?) ... when someone says to me "If you were to die tonight, do you know where you'd spend eternity?", they're not baptists. They're presbyterians. Mostly Briarwood Presbyterian. So I'm forced to ask the baptists "How's it working"?

God tells me I was baptized into the Body of Christ, for purposes for which He's prepared me by His gifting me. My irrefusable duty is to use the gift(s) in His Kingdom work, as and where He says.

Hey, the Holy Ghost is said to be living in here somewhere; I ought to be able to ask Him, right?

Would someone define Calvanism, election, free will, etc. in simple terms? I grew up in a Foursquare church, got saved as a hippy at Calvary Chapel (and baptised in the ccean with 400 others - no idea if the pastor believed in eternal security didn't care this was an act of obedience between me and my God), attend SB churches and hear altar calls each Sunday to the same 200 people to no avail. How does it all fit?
