Question of the Day, On Hypocrisy

Should Southern Baptist preachers who murmur on about the evils of beverage alcohol be members of country clubs they serve alcohol or should their churches buy luxury sky boxes at athletic stadiums that serve alcohol and advertise for the alcohol industry.

If they are going to be consistent with resolutions that the SBC has passed over the years the obvious answer would be a firm "no."

Whether nor not they are consistent with those resolutions they are implicitly supporting the alcohol industry by their participation in such things.

What about shopping at stores that sell alcohol or eating at restaurants that serve it?

Hey! I (and many others) want the name of the churches that are going to buy the luxury skyboxes at stadiums! Are any of them looking for pastors? (preferably in Texas or least the Big 12)

There was an article in the ABP dated April 1, 2004 Volume: 04-32-4183, that quoted O S Hawkins about the SBC Annunity Board investments in sin stocks.

According to an Annunity Board report from June 2003, the Baptist retirement agency owned 26,200 shares of Carnival Cruise Lines in its Equity Index Fund and 337,600 shares in its Value Index Fund.

Hawkins acknowledged some Southern Baptists have expressed concerns about the boards holdings in companies such as Carnival Cruise Lines, whose self proclaimed "fun ships" feature gambling casinos and alcohol sales.

"Unlike individual investors, Hawkins said , the Annunity Board's holdings is held to a different standard of fiduciary responsibility as it invests participants' retirement dollars. The board is obligated to seek a good return for its participants."

The address for this was http://www.abpnews.com/abpnews/story.cfm?newsid=4183&action=2

When you try the artical address, it said the artical is no longer available.

A similiar artical also appeared in newspapers such as the Commercial Appeal in Memphis.

Didn't Ronnie Floyd see the light in his endorsement of a local stadium? BUT, will he attend the games?

Seriously, how can we avoid this?

We know of a mega Baptist church in the DFW metroplex that has a skybox at the home Texas Rangers.

I'll give you two guess to name the austere church.

I don't like asparagus, but that doesn't keep me out of the grocery section at Wal-Mart (an insitution, by the way, through which Arkansans are conquering the universe)!

And for those of you wondering, FBC Farmersville is not the church with the skybox at the Rangers game. We do, however, occasionally get prime seating at U. S. Lawn Mower Racing Association events.
