Head on over to Burleson Central Station and read about the letter he received from a SWBTS student, who referenced Dr. SiegfriedSchatzmann's writings concerning a private prayer language.

I commented on Wade's blog and desire to do so here as to the theology and character of Dr. Siegfried Schatzmann. He and Mattie, his wife, are absolutely choice people. Not only are they personal friends of years back but I had the privilage of being their pastor for three years during an earlier teaching assignment.

They are Baptist by conviction and study not family history. Dr. Schatzmann has a tremendous confidence in the scriptures and a gracious respect for people who differ with him in some minor points of theology. But, as I said on Wade's blog, if you do disagree you better know where of you speak textually because he sure does. They are a real credit to Baptist life and particularly as an Academician.

By the way, I'm an avid reader of this blog. Keep up the good work.

Hey Paul, thanks for reading the blog. We personally do not know Dr. Schatzmann and are very glad you came over and commented. He sounds like someone we definitely need at SWBTS. We hope Patterson does not try to mess with him, and others, who don’t maintain his idea of “doctrinal purity.”

Dr. Schatzmann is everything that Pastor Burleson has said of him, AND MORE. And, for that reason, he would be very disappointed to know that someone was using his name to suggest an attitude or action of Dr. Patterson that is not accurate.

Dr. Schatzmann has nothing to fear. He has obviously been given a stamp of approval by Paige Patterson or he would not be teaching at SWBTS. They probably knew McKissic’s beliefs on this issue before they asked him to be a trustee. It was not a problem until he became vocal about it and embarrassed Patterson. The PPL issue is not about theology. It was initiated to get Jerry Rankin. When the leaders of the conservative resurgence want to get someone, they will find a controversy and use it to attack that person. If they cannot find a legitimate issue, they will manufacture one. They have done this in the past with Ruschlikon, the BWA and the BF&M. Consider this statement by Paige Patterson in the early years of the resurgence.

April 23, 1980 interview with Baptist Standard Associate Editor Toby Duren on the Baptist Faith and Message.
Patterson said that he new of no movement to change the 1963 BF&M. “I wouldn’t change the 1963 statement myself,” he said, “I am perfectly happy with it because, as you know, it says the Bible contains truth without mixture of error. Whether you say inerrant or truth without mixture of error for its matter is inconsequential. In fact, our whole deal is not the necessity of changing the statement of faith.

There was nothing wrong with the 1963 BF&M. This was all just to give them another tool to attack people and divide our convention.
