    Sloan recommended as HBU president

    By Ken Camp
    Managing Editor
Robert Sloan, chancellor and controversial former president of Baylor University, appears poised to assume the presidency of Houston Baptist University.
The HBU presidential search committee recommended Sloan at a special called meeting of the university’ board of trustees Aug. 1, and the board will reconvene Aug. 8 to vote on the recommendation.
“God’s hand has been in the prayerful and deliberate efforts of the search committee. They ultimately reached out to Robert Sloan, and—simultaneously—God’s hand was guiding him to HBU,” said Trustee Chairman Ray Cox of Houston, who praised Sloan as “a renowned Christian educator.”
    Robert Sloan
The trustees affirmed the search committee and its recommendation at the called meeting, Cox noted.
Sloan spent two days on the Houston campus meeting with the search committee and trustees, as well as other groups including the faculty, staff, alumni and students who served on the advisory search committee—a group that also affirmed the recommendation, Cox added.

    You Go Liz!!

Token "View" conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck doesn't hide her emotions when it comes to the controversy surrounding the morning-after pill. A heated discussion about the subject erupted on Wednesday's show when Barbara Walters brought up that the controversial morning-after pill was being considered for approval for over-the-counter distribution by the FDA. Hasselbeck became visibly upset while arguing the topic and was scolded by Walters for being overly emotional.

    Dark Clouds Over Arkansas
The State Loses Paul Eells: Sportcaster, Friend, and Follower of Christ.

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Paul Eells, sports director of Little Rock television station KATV for nearly three decades, was killed Monday evening along with another driver in a head-on collision on Interstate 40 at Russellville, state police said.
A police report said Eells' car, eastbound near the Arkansas 331 exit from I-40, crossed the median and collided in the westbound lanes with a car driven by Billie J. Burton, 40, of Dover. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene after the accident at 8:13 p.m., the report said.
Eells, 70, was returning to his home to Little Rock after participating in a golf tournament for sports figures and the media at Fayetteville.
Eells, a West Branch, Iowa native, joined the staff at KATV in 1978, and was widely known by sports fans in Arkansas as well as by reporters and editors across the South.
He was named Arkansas Sportscaster of the Year 11 times and was also honored with the Associated Press award for best sports play-by-play several times.
A graduate of the University of Iowa, he began his broadcast career with radio station KOKX in Keokuk, Iowa, as an announcer. He then moved to WMT in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as sports director where he did play-by-play for his alma mater.
He was sports director at WSM radio and television in Nashville, Tenn., from 1967 until his move to KATV in 1978. While at WSM, he did play-by-play for Vanderbilt University in addition to covering Tennessee regional high school sports.
Eells is survived by his wife, Vickie, a son and two daughters.

    From the Culture Desk...

At issue, Church vs. State once again. Read the latest from the LA Times:

Churches Putting Town Out of Business

Stafford, Texas, has 51 tax-exempt religious institutions and wants no more: 'Somebody's got to pay for police, fire and schools.

    'By Lianne Hart
    Times Staff Writer
    July 31, 2006

STAFFORD, Texas — They are not the words one expects to hear from a politician or a Southerner, and Leonard Scarcella is both: "Our city has an excessive number of churches.

"Scarcella is mayor of this Houston-area community, which has 51 churches and other religious institutions packed into its 7 square miles.

With some 300 undeveloped, potentially revenue-producing acres left in Stafford, officials are scrambling to find a legal way to keep more tax-exempt churches from building here.

"With federal laws, you can't just say, 'We're not going to have any more churches,' " Scarcella said. "We respect the Constitution, but 51 of anything is too much."

    Read the whole thing

ME: Can't say I care too much for the headline. I really didn't care much for this sentence:

"Lawyers researching ways to stop church growth here will report back to city leaders in about six weeks, Scarcella said."

Is this really what passes for responsible representative government? I wonder what the city is actually doing in the way of recruiting new businesses? Seems like that would be a better use of resources.

I have a feeling, however, this will not be an isolated case. The pro-tax crowd has threatened churches' tax-exempt status for years. Reversing that status could have a significant impact on churches' ministry resources. Let's pray it doesn't come to that.
